WHO WE ARE

Welcome from USGA President James Bultema

Ulysses S. Grant’s memoirs are among the most renowned examples of nonfiction prose ever written by an American. But Grant did more than write memoirs. Thanks to the dedication of the late editor John Y. Simon, we can read about Grant’s thoughts, feelings, and daily experiences.
This correspondence, which has influenced American history, comes from over 50,000 documents contained in the 32 volumes of The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant.

At the Ulysses S. Grant Association and Presidential Library, our organization takes pride in being the custodians of these important American historical documents, including the highly regarded annotated memoirs of Grant.

Our host institution is the Mitchell Memorial Library at Mississippi State University. The USGA arrived in 2009 after President Mark E. Keenum and Frances Coleman, then dean of libraries, invited the Grant Association to make the library our new home. MSU is one of only six presidential libraries on a university campus. In conjunction with the Frank J. and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana, MSU leads the nation in providing a balanced study of the conditions that led to the Civil War and in documenting the conflict, Reconstruction, and national reunification.

Following in the footsteps of two renowned historians, John Y. Simon and John F. Marszalek, Anne Marshall, a respected Civil War historian and professor at MSU, serves as executive director of the Ulysses S. Grant Association and Presidential Library. With state-of-the-art archival and museum facilities to preserve and showcase the collections, Dr. Marshall plans to increase access to and visibility of the USGA and to make the visitor experience easier, both in person and online.

Please consider becoming a member to support our efforts to showcase the books, articles, and memorabilia that tell the story of American icon Ulysses S. Grant.

Thank You,
